2010 Lucien Albrecht Riesling Réserve

2010 Lucien Albrecht Riesling Réserve

2010 Lucien Albrecht Riesling RéserveI love Riesling. Sweet, semi-dry, dry – it doesn’t matter, I enjoy it all. While I’m partial to German and Finger Lakes Riesling, there’s no denying that the Alsatians do it very well also.

Pale yellow in the glass, this Alsatian Riesling offers aromas of apple and pear. In the mouth, it’s not sweet at all and has Asian pear and floral flavors. Enjoyable dry finish.

Pairings: Shellfish, especially lobster

Style: White Wine

Grape Type(s): Riesling

Region: Alsace, France

Price: $20

This wine was provided to me for sampling and I am adding to my repertoire as it is truly enjoyable.

Pierre Sparr Crémant D’Alsace Brut Rosé

Pierre Sparr Crémant D’Alsace Brut Rosé

Pierre Sparr Crémant D'Alsace Brut RoséIn the glass, this Crémant D’Alsace is bright pink. It looks like it’ll have a strawberry aroma and indeed does. The strawberry carries over in the mouth, but it’s laced with citrus and a little clove. The bubbles / texture is creamy and silky. Nice level of acidity and a clean, dry finish.

This Pierre Sparr Crémant D’Alsace Brut Rosé will please cocktail party wine drinkers and more serious wine fans.

Pairings: Use as an aperitif at a cocktail party with or without food. Seafood in light sauces, poached chicken.

Style: Sparkling Wine

Grape Type(s): Pinot Noir

Region: Alsace, France

Price: $15

2009 Domaine Frédéric Mochel Riesling Altenberg de Bergbieten Cuvee Henriette

2009 Domaine Frédéric Mochel Riesling Altenberg de Bergbieten Cuvee Henriette

I had the pleasure of sampling this outstanding Riesling from Alsace at a recent wine tasting.  The vines from which the grapes for this wine are gathered are over 50 years old and 100% hand-picked.

The nose is pungent with citrus and floral notes.  The bold flavors are of peach, pear and nectarine with a super combination of richness and freshness. The long finish offers hints of licorice and a little smokiness.

Just a very enjoyable wine that could benefit from some cellaring.

Pairings: Buttered lobster, bouillabaisse, blue cheese dishes, Thai food.

Style: White

Grape Type(s): Riesling

Region: Alsace, France

Around $40.

Lucien Albrecht Crémant d’Alsace Brut Rosé NV

This wine from Alsace is pale salmon-colored in the glass and offers sweet strawberry and ripe cherry aromas.  In the mouth, it’s typical (and lovely) Crémant – moussy and creamy.  Luscious, yet light, strawberries-and-cream flavors.

Style: Rosé Sparkling

Grape Type(s): Pinot Noir

Region: Alsace, France

1999 Trimbach Gewürztraminer

1999 Trimbach Gewürztraminer

I paired this wine from Alsace, France with lobster over the weekend and thought it was a good match.

In the glass, this wine is deep golden hinting at a heaviness and richness.  On the nose, there’s honeyed sweetness but in the mouth, it’s anything but sweet.  The 1999 Trimbach Gewürztraminer isn’t light-bodied by any means, but it’s not as bold on the palate as the nose indicated it might be.  There are floral notes and juicy honeydew flavors with a crisp, dry finish.

This wine is okay for me and I like that it’s available everywhere, but I think there are Austrian, German and Finger Lakes examples of this varietal done in a better way for the same price point.

Wine Spectator: 87 points.
