2008 Wyndham Estate BIN 555 Shiraz

2008 Wyndham Estate BIN 555 Shiraz

I’d had this bottle for a while and when I planned a casual grilled steak dinner for Memorial Day weekend, I opted to open it for my guests.

In the glass, the wine is bright ruby with some violet hues. Very pretty.  On the nose, there are aromas of stone fruit with a little coffee and chocolate and some spiced notes.  On the palate, this rich Australian Shiraz is big with dark cherry flavor and plummy chewiness laced with clove and nutmeg.

Pairings:  Grilled steaks, meat lasagna.

Style: Red

Grape Type(s): Syrah

Region: South Eastern Australia

2008 Jacob’s Creek Reserve Barossa Shiraz

2008 Jacob’s Creek Reserve Barossa Shiraz

I had the pleasure of sampling several Jacob’s Creek Reserve wines at a recent tasting and the 2008 Jacob’s Creek Reserve Barossa Shiraz was among them.

In the glass, the wine is deep ruby and viscous.

On the nose, it features powerful plummy, spiced notes.

On the palate, the plummy nose carries over on this Australian Shiraz.  It’s a chewy big mouthful with tons of freshly ground pumpkin pie spices with a rich, slightly sweet long finish.

Perfect with braised meats.

Around $13.

2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet

2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill

2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill

I selected this wine for a ‘blends’ tasting last week since it’s 75% Shiraz and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon.  This wine has an appealing purple-ruby hue in the glass. The nose is of in-your-face, vibrant berries with a fair amount of oak from the eight months this wine spent in seasoned oak. One sip of the 2007 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet and you’ll be hit with coffee, dark spiced fruit and a lovely chocolate finish. This medium-bodied wine is well-balanced and lightly tannic.
