1984 Chateau Gruaud Larose

1984 Chateau Gruaud Larose

1984 Chateau Gruaud LaroseMy dad poured this wine at Christmas to pair with rare prime rib au jus and it was superb.

In the glass, this Bordeaux blend is brick red. On the nose, it has barnyard and earthy aromas that I sniffed for quite a while before moving on to a sip. In the mouth, the 1984 Chateau Gruaud Larose has stone fruit, leathery, mushroomy and mossy flavors. The tannins are still present, but after a bit of time in the glass, the wine became rounder, softer but still pretty great albeit perhaps a bit past its prime.

Pairings: Beef, French onion soup.

Grape Type(s): Bordeaux blend – Cabernet Sauvignon: 57% / Merlot: 31% / Cabernet Franc: 8% / Petit Verdot: 2% / Malbec: 2%.

2002 Chateau Preuillac Cru Bourgeois Medoc

2002 Chateau Preuillac Cru Bourgeois Medoc

Paired this French Bordeaux with rare roasted duck and it was a nice pairing.  In the glass, it’s brick red in color.  The nose is an appealing blend of plum, coffee and leather.  In the mouth, the stone fruit comes through along with vanilla and mocha notes.  Medium finish with softened tannins.

Pairings:  Grilled or roasted beef or duck.  Cheesy dishes.

Style: Red

Grape Type(s): 50% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc

Region: Bordeaux / Medoc, France

2003 Clos du Marquis Saint Julien

2003 Clos du Marquis Saint Julien

My dad uncorked this little gem during my last trip home to Quebec and what a treat it was.

The color in the glass is deep and purple.  Just really pretty.  The nose offers stone fruit and black licorice with some spiced notes.  In the mouth, this Bordeaux is rich and luscious with black berries, dark chocolate, a little coffee and some nutmeg notes.  The finish is long, sweet and velvety with the right amount of acidity.

This is a second label wine for Chateau Léoville Las Cases yet a very solid, first-rate wine.

Around $60.
